The LST-1, inaugurated in October 2018, detected its first source of gamma rays on November 23, 2019 from the Crab Nebula. The LST team is formed by more than 200 scientists from 11 countries: Brazil, Bulgaria, Croatia, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Poland, Spain and Switzerland.

The LST-1 is one of the four LSTs that will be part of the CTA-North matrix located at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory of the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canary Islands (IAC) on the island of La Palma. The four LSTs will cover the low energy sensitivity of CTA, between 20 and 150 GeV. The LST-1 has a reflective surface of 23 meters in diameter, measures 45 meters high, weighs about 100 tons and can be repositioned in 20 seconds to capture short signals of low energy gamma rays.
